Partner, European Principal Finance

Mr. Baker is a Partner in the European Principal Funds and a Member of Apollo Management International’s management and strategy committees based in London. Prior to joining Apollo in 2012, Mr. Baker was a Managing Director with The Carlyle Group’s distressed debt and special situation investment vehicle where he focused on distressed securities, non-performing loans and privately negotiated distressed investments across a variety of industries. Prior to Carlyle, Mr. Baker was a Managing Director and Equity Partner at Oaktree Capital Management from 2004-2011. He specialized in distressed debt, non-performing loan, and special situation investments in the financial services, real estate, gaming, and lodging and shipping industries. Mr. Baker also took the administrative lead in Oaktree’s efforts to expand its investment activities and staff in Asia, participating in the opening of offices in Tokyo, Beijing and Hong Kong where he was based for 12 months. Prior to joining Oaktree, Mr. Baker spent nearly four and a half years at JPMorgan Chase and its predecessor organizations, serving as a Vice President in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group responsible for executing sell-side, buy-side and leverage finance transactions for the firm’s private equity client base as well as a Special Aide to the Office of the Vice Chairmen. Prior to his graduate studies, Mr. Baker served as the Chief Speechwriter and Special Policy Assistant to Governor George W. Bush, subsequently the 43rd President of the United States. Prior thereto, Mr. Baker served on active duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Army where he was a qualified paratrooper. Mr. Baker received his MBA from Harvard Business School, JD from The University of Texas School of Law where he was an Associate Editor of The Texas Law Review, and a BA degree in Government magna cum laude from Harvard University.
